As a rule of thumb, I always give my mowers a tune up at least once a year. Even then, I still check the oil and air filter frequently. If you use a mower commercially or do more than one yard a week, I would keep track of how many hours the mower is run and service the mower based on an hourly schedule (every 50 hours, for example). It is also recommended to check the mower blade to check for any damage or dents on the blade. The blade will start to dull over time, so be prepared to sharpen and balance the blade when needed (we have some specific videos for sharpening and balancing mower blades).
To get started, make sure you have the supplies and tools needed to get the job done.
